Attention: If you are looking for a different approach to improving your health
that provides an understanding of "why" you have
any condition,
and a personalized road map toward TRUE HEALTH...

Most people don’t consider infertility a health problem, but sure enough, it is a symptom of an
underlying health problem.  And just like all health problems, I look for the CAUSE.  PCOS is the
number one cause of infertility, caused by elevated insulin, low grade inflammation, and high
testosterone. (according to text books)  In this case history, you will see why we run the labs…this
patient had PCOS and infertility problems, but did NOT have high insulin or testosterone.

The story is all too common…a young couple excited to grow their family and have their first
baby…and NOTHING HAPPENS.  Month after month, no baby.  Or, as in this case, a pregnancy is
achieved, but within the first trimester…a miscarriage.  In this patient’s case, she had 2 before looking
into fertility care.

Being natural minded, they decided to try the most non-invasive resources (they did consult at a
reproduction clinic first).  Just one more reason I ask, “when did natural become the alternative!?”
Why not try the natural route first?  The science or non-science concern?  You read this through, and
tell me if this is not a scientific approach!

HISTORY:  She had a history of irregular cycles with severe menstrual cramping at her period.  Three
years ago, she was diagnosed with PCOS and offered birth control pills as her treatment plan.  That
seemed detrimental to their goal of pregnancy, and no other options were given, so they opted for no

She also related that her energy levels were very low (2 out of 10), she had problems with insomnia
despite the low energy, and severe back pain that started after a fall years ago, and was finally
concluded to be a permanent injury. (We’ll see about that!)

LABS:  We ran a full system lab plus a female hormonal panel both at day 7 (peak follicular phase),
and day 21 (peak luteal phase) and an adrenal hormone panel (24 hour).  We found a very atypical
pattern for PCOS, but it made total sense given her history.  Her cortisol levels were very high, and
her progesterone levels were very low.  Normal insulin, testosterone, and estrogen.

The point of the testing was to evaluate the domino effect of hormones during a female cycle.  During
the first half of the cycle, a gradual increase in estrogen signals to the ovaries to drop an egg…so if
the estrogen peak is too low…no egg.  In the second half of the cycle, progesterone gradually
increases to thicken the lining of the uterus in preparation for implantation…so if the progesterone is
too low…there is no home for the baby.

Her progesterone levels were 19, with a minimum of 65 needed to thicken the lining enough to make a
safe home.  Fertilization occurred, but the fertilized egg could not properly implant and / or survive in
the undernourished uterine lining.

Remember…keep asking why!  Why was she not producing progesterone normally!?

Your adrenal glands are known as the “stress glands” because they were designed to survive drought
and famine.  If you have no water, these glands produce a hormone called aldosterone, which
preserves your body fluids.  If you have no food, these glands produce a hormone called cortisol,
which converts stored energy (fat) into glucose for energy production.  I know what you are thinking,
but, sorry, starvation doesn’t work for fat burning, as it also suppresses your thyroid to lower
metabolism, so you survive… but actually increase fat deposition and feel crappy in the meantime.

Which is right about where she was!

Obviously in nature, living off nature, this would be a bad time to become pregnant (famine).  So God
created us in a way that cortisol and progesterone are made from the same raw
material…cholesterol!  So… if you need more cortisol to survive, you cannot make progesterone for
reproduction because the raw materials are being used for survival.  (which, of course, is a higher
priority in that moment!)  Pretty flipping amazing and well constructed, right??!!

Remember…keep asking why!  Why was she producing such high levels of cortisol?  (Her refrigerator
was sufficiently stocked up!!)

It turns out that she was a chronic breakfast skipper!  She was also a “pleaser,” which led to her doing
many things and spending considerable time and energy taking care of other people’s needs, which
led to MORE missing of her own (too busy to stop and eat!).  Now you know what it REALLY MEANS
when people say, “breakfast is the most important meal of the day!”

The initial “prescription” was to eat protein every 2 hours.  This is a neat trick to avoid the release of
cortisol.  As I understand, when you eat protein, it signals to the liver to convert stored energy into
glucose, just like fasting signals to the adrenals.  So you get the job done minus the cortisol!

We also used two adaptogenic plants…which are thus named because they seem to help us adapt to
stress and even reverse the effects of stress…called American Ginseng and Eleuthero, also known
as Siberian Ginseng.  How appropriate is that!?  A plant that grows in the cold, mountainous, sparsely
populated Siberia…that helps with the stress of famine!?

Current research indicates that these plants have a nourishing effect on the pituitary gland, which is
the control center for all other glands.  So if we want to decrease stress hormones, and increase sex
hormones, they appear to be an ideal plant!

RESULTS:  As mentioned, Progesterone levels at day 21 were 19 in April, with 65 being the bare
minimum for a healthy uterine lining.  By July, her progesterone levels were 61…more than tripled!
She started asking about “planning and trying” again.  I shared… “I have five kids, and here’s how it
works…let nature guide…when it is time, your libido will rocket launch…your husband will suddenly
look irresistible…just follow natures urges.”

A bit later in the year, she remarked at one visit that her husband resembled Brad Pitt…but just for a
week.  (I’m paraphrasing…read that as “Quite Desirable!”)  Her next test showed that her
progesterone levels were 108, but her hormones “naturally” beat me to reporting that to her…she was
already pregnant.  And now…she is well into her second trimester…their first baby due

And yes, her “permanent” back injury was virtually resolved by the end of her first month of care.  Her
energy and sleep are solid, and her menstrual irregularity is completely resolved…meaning none
(which is optimal) in over 4 months!

As a patient, you must ask…
“WHY do I have these symptoms!?”
